How did the Elijah Craig History (and Cocktail) Trail come about? 

The Elijah Craig History (and Cocktail) Trail was created to celebrate one of Orange County’s influential historical figures while giving visitors a fun, interactive way to experience Orange County, Virgina. Although Elijah Craig is best known as the “Father of Bourbon,” many people don’t realize his story began right here in Orange County, Virginia. The trail combines historic sites connected to Craig’s life with local restaurants and distillery where visitors can abide in a delicious cocktail, creating an experience that blends history, local flavor, and tourism into one memorable adventure.

What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about Elijah Craig’s time in Orange County? 

One of the biggest surprises is that Elijah Craig was actually jailed multiple times in Orange and Culpeper counties—not for making whiskey, but for preaching without a license from the established Anglican Church. His willingness to challenge religious restrictions helped influence the movement toward religious freedom in Virginia, and his advocacy even intersected with ideas that shaped James Madison’s views on freedom of conscience. Long before he became associated with bourbon, Craig was known locally as a bold Baptist minister and community leader.

Since the trail serves as a history lesson, do you recommend a specific order of stops for people to follow? 

We recommend starting with the historic sites to learn about Elijah Craig’s life in Orange County and understand how his early experiences shaped his legacy. From there, visitors can continue to the participating restaurants and distillery to enjoy local flavors of Orange County.
